Hip-hop group MIB will soon be challenging the world of reality television for the first time in their lives.
MIB has been selected as main cast members for the upcoming premiere of Season 2 of Mnet‘s “W Academy” on March 21st, and this is going to be their first time since their debut that the members will have their personal names attached to their own reality program.
Deviating from the reality program format in which viewers can watch a star’s every movement, “W Academy” focuses on a concept in which its leading players, MIB, are enrolled into a world star training school called “W Academy,” where they will take rigorous courses for 8 weeks in order to be made into the newest driving force of the K-POP hallyu craze.
MIB are hip-hoppers to the core, but in this program, they will be placed out of their comfort zones and will face the challenges of mastering how to be an idol after gaining special admission to “W Academy.” Whereas the first season’s leads, Boyfriend, were quite popular for their boyish and fresh images, MIB has somewhat of a bad boy image, as may be standard for the hip-hop world, and are thus expected to present viewers with a refreshing shock.
Being chosen as the main cast members of “W Academy,” MIB belongs to Korea’s best hip-hop label Jungle Entertainment, which also manages Drunken Tiger, Yoon Mirae and Leessang. The 4-membered hip-hop group displays a charisma unlike other rookies out there and promise to be among the next generation’s hip-hop icons. They recently received acknowledgement for their talents when they were invited as the special guests for global musicians will.i.am and Far East Movement‘s performances in Korea. Meanwhile, with the exception of music programs and performance stages, MIB usually refrains from such exposure, so fans’ anticipation for the second season of “W Academy” rose when word got out that they would be appearing solo this time on a reality program.
MIB shared their thoughts on what this meant to them,
“We feel burdened by taking on the reality program alone, but we think it’s a good opportunity to show the general public the personalities of MIB. We will try to appeal to you by showing you our honest selves.”
MIB’s “W Academy” will air every Wednesday evening at 6:00 PM through the cable channel Mnet. In the meantime, with the supporting fire of their agency’s musically talented sunbaes, MIB will also be making their comeback on April 5th.
With invitations to open for will.i.am and Far East Movement, it really seems like MIB has star potential, so I’m excited to get to know these guys better and watch them grow into the next big thing. After all, reality television is such a key factor in becoming famous in the K-pop industry. Who knows? Maybe “W Academy” will be for MIB what “Idol Army Show” was for 2PM, a gateway into stardom.
